Welcome to the much-anticipated relaunch of The Oliver Bardwell Podcast! We’re back, ready to dive into the heart of important stories, profound insights, and meaningful conversations that inspire, challenge, and uplift.

For our return episode [ LINK ], I had the honor of hosting the incredible Dr. Mollie James, whose unwavering commitment to truth and healing has left a lasting impact on countless lives.

Dr. James and I first crossed paths in 2022 at the Iowa State Capitol, where she joined me for a pivotal lunch-and-learn session with 40 legislators. Her fearless advocacy for truth about COVID-19 and the medical system's response had a significant influence then, and it continues to resonate today. This episode picks up where we left off, exploring her ongoing work, her new mission in North Carolina, and the lessons she’s learned in her extraordinary journey.

A Calling to Serve: North Carolina Disaster Relief

When disaster struck North Carolina—a hurricane in the mountains, no less—Dr. James felt a deep, undeniable calling to help. She recounts how she and her team of volunteers sprang into action, bringing much-needed medical aid and supplies to communities left isolated and devastated.

“We didn’t know where we were going or what we were going to do,” she shared. “We just thought, they need some help. We’ll figure it out when we get there.”

Armed with determination and guided by faith, her team set up a mobile medical clinic in Avery County, where they provided care to those who had been left behind by an inadequate government response.

Dr. James described heartbreaking scenes of homes swept away by 40-foot walls of water and entire communities cut off from communication. Despite bureaucratic obstacles, including a cease-and-desist order from local authorities, she and her team persisted.

“We were just people helping people,” she said. “We didn’t let the red tape stop us from doing what was right.”

Government Failures and Grassroots Solutions

As our conversation unfolded, Dr. James shed light on the discrepancies between the official narrative and the reality on the ground. The government’s response was hampered by inefficiencies, leaving it to private citizens and organizations to step in.

She recounted how the lack of electricity and internet rendered FEMA’s online claim process virtually useless for many disaster victims. Families who had lost everything were told they didn’t qualify for aid simply because inspectors couldn’t access their homes. “It’s a lack of common sense and flexibility,” Dr. James lamented.

“People sleeping in tents were denied assistance because their tiny homes didn’t meet code.”

Despite these challenges, grassroots efforts like hers made a profound impact. Her team worked tirelessly to deliver supplies, set up makeshift clinics, and bring hope to those who had lost everything. “We’re not just a clinic,” she emphasized. “We’re a lifeline for these communities.”

Lessons in Preparedness

One of the most thought-provoking parts of our conversation was Dr. James’ insight into preparedness. She’s not a self-described “prepper,” but her experience has taught her the importance of basic survival skills and resources.

She highlighted the critical need for alternative communication methods, such as ham radios, when cell towers fail. She also stressed the value of learning to read maps, having an emergency supply of gasoline, and owning tools like chainsaws for clearing debris.

“You don’t want to sit and wait for someone to rescue you,” she said. “It’s empowering to know you can take care of yourself and your family.”

Dr. James also mentioned how her team’s collaboration with anti-trafficking groups ensured that vulnerable families were protected during the chaos.

“Where there’s chaos, there are always bad actors,” she warned. “We partnered with organizations to make sure those most at risk were safe.”

A Life of Service: From New York City to North Carolina

Dr. James’ drive to serve in times of crisis is not new. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she volunteered in New York City, working in overwhelmed ICUs and witnessing firsthand the devastating impact of the virus and the systemic failures in its management.

“In early 2020, we were all doing the best we could with the information we had,” she reflected. “But looking back, it’s clear that many lives were lost unnecessarily due to bad policies and a lack of transparency.”

Her experiences during COVID shaped her current work and reinforced her belief in the power of grassroots action.

“Whether it’s a pandemic or a natural disaster, the most effective solutions often come from the people on the ground, not the bureaucracies,” she said.

Looking Ahead: The Starlight Initiative

Dr. James’ mission doesn’t stop with disaster relief. Her newly formed nonprofit, the Starlight Initiative, aims to provide long-term solutions for those affected by disasters. The organization plans to develop livable plots of land for displaced families, offering tiny homes and mobile housing as a path to recovery.

“We want to be the medical response team that’s ready to deploy whenever and wherever we’re needed,” she explained.

“This isn’t just a one-time effort. It’s a commitment to being there for people in their darkest moments.”

As the holidays approach, the Starlight Initiative is organizing a toy drive to bring some joy to children affected by the disaster in North Carolina. It’s a small step toward restoring a sense of normalcy and hope.
